In a much reproduced photograph, she is seen smoking a cigar and holding a glass of wine, with drink apparently spilt down her front. ![]() Truss and Coffey made their way in a party which still did not have very many women MPs, knew it needed more, and wanted those it selected to get there on merit rather than as mere recipients of orders handed down by the leadership.Ĭoffey’s defiance of received wisdom extended to her personal appearance, which owed nothing to Thatcher. Their friendship began in the autumn of 2009 when Truss was selected for South-West Norfolk and Coffey was one of the runners-up, soon afterwards gaining selection for Suffolk Coastal.Īt first sight, it may seem odd that Truss the libertarian individualist, and Coffey, the conservative-minded Roman Catholic, formed such a close bond.īut both were outsiders in East Anglia, Truss from Leeds and Coffey from Liverpool, and both have a strong inclination to back their own judgment rather than do as they are told.īoth admired Margaret Thatcher, seen by them as a woman who had triumphed in what was still a man’s world by having the courage of her convictions. When the Prime Minister addressed the party conference in Birmingham, there in the front row sat the Deputy Prime Minister, nodding, clapping and wearing a beam of approval. Liz Truss has no more devoted friend in politics than Thérèse Coffey.
